Go with the vibe

Go with the vibe

Rustic chic and pared back glamour, Bridgeton inspired weddings and tropical glamour…..Apparently these are just some of the must have trends for the weddings this season! Wedding planning websites, Instagram and Pinterest are all full of advice on how to have an insta worthy wedding, but do you really need a theme, a style or a colour scheme and how on earth do you choose?

At one time a theme or a particular style was considered a lot of extra work and potentially increased the cost of the day but this is something which has really changed. Where you might have had only had a handful of florists, car providers and even dress shops, the internet has provided an almost limitless range of options for almost every aspect of a wedding.

Having a theme or a style is not about giving you more options, but rather helping you narrow down the endless list of options.

Mood boards

I’m a massive fan of a mood board, you could make a board or scrap-book with things cut from magazines, fabric samples and different types of foliage alternatively you could a digital platform like Pinterest or Instagram. A lot of my couples use something digital as it allows them to share their ideas with various suppliers, don’t be afraid to start by putting together a wide variety of different ideas, you will soon start to see themes appearing which will really help narrow everything down.

Choose one thing

If you are going with a theme it can really help to have a focal point which really brings everything together, it might be a TARDIS wedding cake or a Disney inspired bouncy castle, having a talking point is a big plus point and it will certainly make your day memorable.

Go with your gut

Back in the wedding guide on choosing your venue we talked about using the things you really don’t want to choose what you do want. Is there a particular style or trend that you really don’t want? It might be a tradition or some aspect of the day such as a first dance or even having bridesmaids. The earlier you make that decision, the easier it will be to plan the rest of your day.

Stick to the plan

Once you have settled on a colour scheme or style, stick with it! It can be tempting to switch part way through but if you have already started buying items or ordering elements of your day, it can be really expensive to switch. You might come across an amazing bargain or be gifted something but if it means redoing your entire colour scheme then it won’t save you money in the long run.

Social media

As a wedding photographer I post a lot on social media, and I follow a lot of trends but ultimately the people who really need to love the colour scheme, styling and theme are you and your partner. Don’t feel pressured into having a particular style just because it will suit other people, this is your day and if you want a Doctor who themed wedding, then go for it!
